We're so excited to be teaming up with USA Football

In February league president, Jeff Boyus, attended the national USA Football Conference in Kentucky with several thousand youth, high school, and college coaches and league representatives. I came back with a wealth of knowledge that I have begun sharing with our board and coaches. Kennewick Grid Kids is one of only a handful of youth programs nationwide that qualifies for USA Football’s Gold Certification and we are working on our application for that accreditation.

One of the most exciting things to come out of the conference was USA Football’s Development Model which we will begin implementing in the 2020 season. The Football Development Model focuses on safely teaching the fundamentals in a tiered manner using developmentally appropriate rules, contact levels, and drills. Think of it in terms of youth baseball which uses the same approach through developmental divisions: t-ball, coach pitch, and player pitch at different skill levels. We firmly believe this model embodies the values of KGK and prepares athletes for sports and life beyond Eastgate Park. What does the implementation of this model mean for you? A few things:

  • BRAND NEW Rookie Football Division for 7 year olds and first year 8 year olds to introduce them to the concept of contact football as well as critical positions and skills. Smaller squad sizes allow for more individualized coaching.

  • Divisions by age only.  You will know your child’s division as soon as you register – no more guessing or waiting for weigh-ins.

We understand that these changes will bring up more questions so we have created a graphic to explain the similarities and differences between divisions and options. If you have any further questions or concerns please reach out to the league or your organization’s head coach.
